A field is a kind of laboratory rather than a category of instrument. You choose what you do, and the instrument catalogue, the saved check plans, the standards cited and the document produced all follow from it. 13 fields and 57 instrument types, and a laboratory that does two of them never sees the other eleven.

Calibration — what an instrument reads against a reference

These produce a calibration certificate: traceability to national standards, a stated uncertainty, the declared decision rule, and a grade where the method defines one.

Force and post-tensioning

Hydraulic jacks, jacking systems and load cells for post-tensioning, civil and structural work.

Six months for gas detectors, twelve for the rest. A gas detector is life-safety equipment and a bump test between calibrations is the customer’s job, not the laboratory’s.

Twelve months. These are mixed equipment with no common standard behind them, so the manufacturer’s recommendation decides it more often than convention does.

4 fields · in-service inspection

Inspection — whether an item met a standard’s criteria

These produce an inspection report. It states the criteria, the readings and the outcome, and asserts nothing about the item’s measurement accuracy, because nothing was measured about it. No grade, and never an accreditation mark.

Test and tag — in-service inspection

Testing and tagging appliances, leads and RCDs in service. High volume: hundreds of items a day, most of them passing.

Three months on construction and demolition sites (AS/NZS 3012), six to twelve in an office or a workshop. The same appliance, a different environment — so the interval is the customer’s circumstance rather than a property of the item, and this is the one field where getting that wrong is common.

Insulating gloves, mats and blankets — proof-tested rather than calibrated.

Twelve months, or as the equipment’s own risk classification requires.
Why the difference is enforced rather than documented. The discriminator is the item, not the shape of the check. A 500 V insulation tester must deliver at least its rated voltage at rated current under AS/NZS 3763 — a one-sided limit inside a genuine calibration. Calibrating an RCD tester against a reference is calibration; testing an RCD in a switchboard is inspection. Same standard, same measurement, different document, because the item is a different kind of thing.

Electrical test and tag, in depth

The largest of the thirteen fields by volume, and the least like the others. Hundreds of items a day rather than one instrument in an afternoon, almost all of them passing, and an inspection report at the end rather than a certificate.

The batch grid, not the bench sheet

Hundreds of appliances, leads and RCDs a day, entered across a grid rather than down a form. The bench sheet is right for one jack in an afternoon and wrong for a pallet of kettles, and the two sit beside each other so a technician chooses by what is on the trolley.

One-sided limits, properly modelled

AS/NZS 3760 bounds earth resistance in one direction only — ≤ 1 Ω, with nothing to say about how much lower is better. A tolerance band with a lower limit invented to fill the field is a fabricated criterion on a safety document, so the engine carries genuine one-sided limits and go/no-go checks with no numeric reading at all.

An inspection report, and never a certificate

An appliance is not calibrated, and heading its document “Calibration Certificate” tells a reader something that cannot be true of a kettle. The discriminator is the item rather than the shape of the check, it is stored on the document at issue, and the accreditation mark is refused rather than explained in a footnote.

Test tags that say next test due

The tag on the appliance reads the date the person holding it needs, printed as ZPL straight to the printer. It carries a QR code like everything else, so a site supervisor can check the item without an account, an app or a phone call to your office.

Three months on a site, twelve in an office

The interval is the customer’s environment rather than a property of the appliance, and the same kettle is due at different times in different places. Intervals are set per instrument type and overridden per item, and the recall ladder follows whatever was actually recorded.

Recorded where there is no signal

A switchboard room, a basement, a construction site. Readings are captured on the device and sync when it reconnects — and the engine deliberately does not run offline, because everything that makes the document defensible depends on checks that cannot run on a handset.

The catalogue

Sorted by physical quantity rather than by field, because the two are different questions: “Electrical” holds a spectrum analyser and an appliance tester, and no business does both. Each type carries a default interval and a pinned calculation template — and a laboratory may add its own, because a catalogue is a starting point and not a ceiling.

The interval is advice, not a rule. It is the laboratory’s decision and in some fields the customer’s environment decides it — test and tag is the clearest case, at three months on a construction site and twelve in an office, for the same appliance either way.

Nothing stops a laboratory booking in an instrument outside the fields it chose, and a new instrument type takes minutes to add. Three disciplines are sold separately because each carries its own standard and its own assessment rather than more of the same work: medical (AS/NZS 3551), hazardous areas (AS/NZS 60079) and legal metrology.
